We first see this in “The Forbidden Zone” (2020), in which Pope, a young Black man, is brutally assaulted by two wealthy White men this short scene is erased of any racial conversation and in doing so upholds White solidarity. Therefore, Outer Banks presents Black characters that face controlling images attached to their racial identity yet fails to discuss this blatant connection and rather encourages global White supremacy that destroys the success and livelihood of Black people. In the episodes, “The Forbidden Zone” (2020), “Parcel 9” (2020), and “The Runway” (2020), Outer Banks shows the viewer the different forms of dehumanizing Black people. Otherwise, we see the reinforcement of hegemonic Whiteness. Outer Banks reflects that the existence of Black characters is simply not enough, there needs to be the acknowledgment of their race. As a widely consumed media text directed towards the shaping minds of teenagers, it is troubling that the presence of race is disregarded even when there are Black characters. The story begins with what seems like the simple friendship of John B, JJ, Pope, and Kie, who are the “Pogues.” Yet as the story progresses we see not only their life-threatening journey to get gold from a sunken ship, but the emerging romance of John B and Sarah, a “Kook.” What fails to be considered throughout the plot is the role of race in the experiences of these characters. The show’s teen soap drama tells the story of John B, JJ, Pope, Kie, and Sarah as they fight for true love and search for hidden treasure. Despite only having premiered four weeks ago, the show has been cited as the most streamed show on Netflix as of May 6th, 2020 (Genovese 2020).

The show entices viewers with romance and friendship instead. The plot is built upon the narrative of this class divide, but other than that the impacts of wealth are substantially ignored throughout the episodes.
